Zambia Implements Electronic Single Window System for Radiation Assessment Fees

Must read

In a significant move aimed at enhancing trade facilitation and ensuring public safety, the Zambian government has announced the transition of the Radiation assessment fee collection process to the Zambia Electronic Single Window (ZESW) system, effective April 19th, 2024.

The Radiation Protection Authority, a regulatory body operating under the Ministry of Technology and Science, oversees the implementation of this transition. Established by the Ionising Radiation Protection Act No. 16 of 2005, as amended by the Ionising Radiation Act No. 19 of 2011, the Authority’s mandate is to safeguard the public, workers, and the environment from the hazards associated with ionising radiation.

Central to this mandate is the monitoring of activities in facilities and locations where ionising radiation sources and materials are used. By ensuring adequate protection and safety measures, the Authority plays a pivotal role in mitigating risks and promoting compliance with radiation safety standards.

The decision to transition the collection of Radiation assessment fees to the Zambia Electronic Single Window system underscores the government’s commitment to trade facilitation and regulatory efficiency. The ZESW system, in line with the provisions of the World Trade Organization Trade Facilitation Agreement, serves as a centralized platform for trade-related activities, simplifying procedures and enhancing cross-border trade efficiency.

Under the new system, the Radiation assessment fee will be collected through the Single Payment Point within the Zambia Electronic Single Window framework. This transition marks a significant step towards harmonizing trade processes and ensuring transparency and accountability in fee collection.

Stakeholders, including transporters, clearing agents, and the public, are urged to familiarize themselves with this change and adapt their business practices accordingly. Furthermore, the scope of goods subject to assessment has been expanded, with detailed information available on the Radiation Protection Authority’s website.

The Radiation Protection Authority expresses gratitude for the cooperation and understanding of all stakeholders involved in this transition. By embracing technological advancements and regulatory reforms, Zambia aims to uphold the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance in trade operations, safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders and promoting sustainable economic growth.
