In a bid to bolster water levels at the Kafue Gorge Power Station, Luanshya Copper Mine (LCM) has initiated a groundbreaking project leveraging its abundant water resources from Shaft 28. This innovative endeavour aims to support power generation activities and mitigate the current energy challenges faced by Zambia.
Sydney Chileya, Corporate Affairs Manager at LCM, unveiled the company’s strategy to extract water from key shafts, including 14, 18, and 28. The primary objective is to channel a significant portion of this water to augment the water supply to the Kafue Gorge Power Station.
Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Chileya emphasised its critical role in addressing the nation’s power needs. “Zesco has joined hands with us because this water will be instrumental in bolstering water levels in the Kafue,” stated Chileya. “Roughly two-thirds of the extracted water will be directed towards power generation, contributing significantly to alleviating the current energy deficit.”
Furthermore, LCM is gearing up to kickstart the recruitment process for skilled personnel as early as June or July of the current year. This proactive decision underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring the smooth execution of water extraction operations.
“Employing skilled individuals not only supports economic activities in the country but also facilitates the successful implementation of our water pumping endeavours,” remarked Chileya.
This collaborative effort between LCM and Zesco signifies a proactive approach to addressing critical infrastructure challenges and enhancing Zambia’s power generation capacity, particularly in the face of prevailing drought conditions.
