Zambia Expands Regional Trade with GMO Mealie Meal Exports to DRC

Must read

In response to Zambia’s domestic mealie meal shortage and to foster regional trade relations, the Zambia National Service (ZNS) has undertaken the importation of 520,000 bags of genetically modified organism (GMO) mealie meal for export to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Défense Minister Ambrose Lufuma confirmed the commencement of imports, which began in May 2023, highlighting their role in alleviating Zambia’s mealie meal shortage. The mealie meal, procured from South Africa, is being transported through Zambia solely for export to the DRC market.

Minister Lufuma stated, “We are continuing with the importation of mealie meal straight from South Africa. This is GMO mealie meal transiting through Zambia to the border for the Democratic Republic of Congo market. This will assist us in mitigating the shortage of mealie meal we have on our market.”

This strategic initiative not only addresses Zambia’s domestic food scarcity but also promotes regional trade integration. By facilitating the transit of GMO mealie meal bound for the DRC, Zambia strengthens its position as a key player in regional trade, fostering economic collaboration within the Southern African region.

The export of GMO mealie meal to the DRC underscores Zambia’s commitment to leveraging its agricultural resources to enhance food security and promote economic development both domestically and across borders. Moreover, it demonstrates Zambia’s willingness to engage in mutually beneficial trade partnerships that support regional stability and prosperity.

In summary, the importation and exportation of GMO mealie meal by the Zambia National Service represent a proactive approach to addressing food shortages while advancing regional trade integration. This initiative underscores Zambia’s commitment to utilizing agricultural resources to drive economic growth and cooperation within the Southern African region.
