In a move geared towards enhancing connectivity and catalysing economic growth, the Zambian government has unveiled ambitious plans for airport infrastructure development, with the construction of a new airport in Chinsali, Muchinga Province, taking centre stage.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Frank Tayali, announced on Delight Radio that construction of the new airport is slated to commence in July 2024, with completion expected within a three-year timeframe. This project represents a substantial investment in Zambia’s infrastructure, aimed at fortifying transportation networks to facilitate trade and tourism.
The proposed airport in Chinsali signifies the government’s steadfast commitment to regional development and economic empowerment. By providing modern aviation facilities, the project aims to attract investment, spur commercial activities, and generate employment opportunities, thereby fostering socio-economic progress in Muchinga Province and its environs.
Execution of the ambitious airport project has been entrusted to the Zambia National Service (ZNS), underscoring the government’s confidence in harnessing local expertise and resources for infrastructure development initiatives. Simultaneously, the government has unveiled plans to expand the runway at Mansa Airport in Luapula Province. Ministry of Information and Media Director, Henry Kapata, revealed that the expansion project will extend the runway from 1.7 kilometres to 3 kilometres, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, including the Boeing 777.
In addition to extending the runway, the project encompasses the construction of essential facilities such as a new fire station and a perimeter fence to bolster safety measures. Strategic measures, such as relocating the new runway further from buildings, aim to mitigate risks and ensure the safety and security of airport operations.
The expansion of Mansa Airport represents a significant enhancement to aviation infrastructure in Luapula Province, poised to bolster air travel capabilities, facilitate cargo transportation, and enhance connectivity with domestic and international destinations. Furthermore, by improving airport facilities and safety standards, the project aims to in still confidence among travellers and stakeholders, contributing to the overall development and competitiveness of the region’s aviation sector.
