NHIMA’s recent announcement to alter the benefits package, effective July 1, 2024, was met with concern. Although the decision was later rescinded, ZMA President Kaumba Tolopu emphasized the importance of consulting relevant stakeholders before making such revisions.
During a media briefing in Lusaka, Tolopu highlighted the risks associated with unscrupulous business practices and emphasized the need for thorough investigation and appropriate consequences for those involved. He underscored the importance of implementing robust system requirements to prevent exploitation and ensure the scheme’s financial stability.
Tolopu emphasized the importance of sustainable revenue collection mechanisms, prudent fund management, and effective monitoring and evaluation systems. He stressed the need to prevent misuse of NHIMA resources and emphasized that funds should be allocated solely for the provision of healthcare services to the Zambian people.
Furthermore, Tolopu emphasised the importance of allowing NHIMA to operate without undue political pressure or interference to enable objective management of its mandate. He noted that while revising the benefits package, NHIMA should consider incorporating the primary benefits recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
