“NKUMBI International College: Sustainable Agricultural Hub”

Must read

The college not only sustains itself through farming but also serves as a vital resource for the local community. Unlike fleeting motivational talks, NKUMBI’s progress is grounded in meticulous planning and hard work, bolstered by grants.

NKUMBI International College in Mkushi stands as a remarkable model of merging education with practical skills to foster sustainability and community development. What was once just an idea has blossomed into a thriving agricultural centre.

Since its inception in 2018 with just five heads of cattle, NKUMBI has seen remarkable growth, now boasting 67 heads of cattle, 65 goats, 21 rabbits, 55 pigs, and 5 sheep. Its poultry production includes free-range and broiler chickens, actively involving agricultural students in livestock management.

Principal Jennifer Chibuye highlights NKUMBI’s farming activities, including maize cultivation on 20 hectares of land and sunflower planting on 2.5 hectares during the 2023-2024 farming season.

This news delighted Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati, who commended NKUMBI’s dedication to agriculture, aligning with the government’s climate resilience efforts. Mutati urged the college to aspire to become an agricultural centre of excellence by 2024.

To achieve this goal, the Minister stressed curriculum revamping to equip students with requisite skills. During his visit, Mutati pledged government support for infrastructure development and public-private partnerships.

Mutati envisions NKUMBI as a premier agriculture demonstration farm, welcoming learners and visitors to learn various agricultural techniques first-hand.

Principal Jennifer Chibuye notes that NKUMBI’s livestock numbers would be higher if not for selling some to sustain students and staff. Through agriculture, NKUMBI not only sustains itself but also supports the community with essentials like cooking oil and mealie meal.

Looking forward, Chibuye hopes for government assistance in acquiring a maize planter and irrigation machine to enhance vegetable production year-round.
