Must read

On her inaugural day at a new hospital, Petronella Mundia didn’t just receive the standard orientation—she was promptly promoted to nurse in charge. While this might seem like a scene out of a movie, for Mundia, it was the start of her remarkable journey in healthcare.

As Nurse Week is commemorated, Kalemba delves into Mundia’s extraordinary career. In an interview, Mundia disclosed her unconventional path, revealing that she had never served solely as a nurse.

For 29 years, Mundia has dedicated herself to caring for the sick, propelled by her deep-rooted Christian faith. Having spent eight years as a Catholic nun, Mundia transitioned to nursing to continue her mission of service.

Despite facing challenges, Mundia remained steadfast in her commitment to nursing. She recounted her humble beginnings at Lukulu Sancta Maria Teaching Hospital, where she was swiftly appointed nurse in charge after just six months. This marked the start of a journey that has seen her rise through the ranks, from acting ward in-charge to clinical instructor, nurse tutor, and principal nursing officer. In 2016, she assumed the role of chief nursing officer at the University Teaching Hospital – Adult Hospital following its decentralization.

Guided by her unwavering faith, Mundia views her work as a religious calling, finding fulfillment in serving the vulnerable and contributing to God’s kingdom through compassionate care.

Her vision extends beyond her own career; she aspires to cultivate a team of adept nurse leaders capable of delivering quality, patient-centered care.

With a Bachelor of Science in nursing and other qualifications under her belt, Mundia currently oversees five nursing units at the University Teaching Hospital. Her journey serves as an inspiring testament to dedication, resilience, and unwavering faith in service of others.
