President Hakainde Hichilema says his regular working visits to the Copperbelt underscore his government’s vision and desire to create a resilient economy.
President Hichilema, who officiated the opening ceremony of the 2024 Technology Empowering Development Forum in Luanshya yesterday recognized the partnership of the China Non-Ferrous Metals Mining Group (CNMC) for investing in providing the necessary technological capabilities to Zambian talent engaged in mining.
The Forum, also attended by the CNMC chief Executive Officer Wang Jingjun is intended to deepen cooperation in mining, explore new opportunities in mining development and improve mineral resource development and utilization.
It is expected that the Forum will also achieve mutually beneficial cooperation.
The President described it as an initiative that comes at a crucial time as the mining industry is taking its rightful position in Zambia’s economy.
“Our regular working visits to the Copperbelt, particularly to Luanshya, underscore our vision and desire to create a resilient economy, provide employment, and offer business opportunities for our people on the Copperbelt. This is done in partnership with companies like CNMC that provide the best technology and value addition.”
He expressed gratitude to CNMC for establishing a technology college in Luanshya to equip young Zambians with the necessary technological capabilities, “aligning with our government’s commitment to enhance skills development for our youth.”
The mining company has just invested $100,000 to construct a state-of-the-art training facility in Luanshya – the SINO-ZAM Vocational College of Science and Technology – which was officially commissioned by the President yesterday.
CNMC owns Luanshya Cooper Mines, which has commenced dewatering of 28 Shaft to return it to production after more than 20 years.
