Born in 1968, Michael Bizwick Usi attended Mulanje Secondary School and previously worked for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency.
He is a multifaceted individual – a politician, movie actor, playwright, and musician. Known for his role as “Dr. Manga” in the film “Dr. MANGA” and as the director of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) series Tikuferanji.
Career:
Dr. Usi rose to fame through radio plays on MBC Radio 1 due to the absence of national television. He then ventured into making feature films that reflect the social and political realities of Malawian life. He is actively involved in nurturing Malawi’s film industry and is a vocal advocate for its growth.
He obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Bedfordshire (England) around 2015, focussing his research on youth engagement in national development strategies, examining the approaches in various countries.
In 2019, he was unveiled as the running mate for the now late United Transformation Movement (UTM) Party leader Saulos Klaus Chilima for the May 21 tripartite elections. Subsequently, Chilima became the running mate Lazarus Chakwera and his Vice President.
In July 2020, Dr. Usi was appointed Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Culture.
Following Chilima’s death in a helicopter accident a few weeks ago, President Chakwera appointed Usi as Vice President on June 20th, in line with the provisions of Malawi’s Constitution.
Malawians rate him highly but he has big shoes to fill as comparisons with Chilima will always linger.
