…lawmaker remanded in custody
Arrested Petauke Central lawmaker, Mr. Emmanuel Jay Banda, has appeared for mention before the Chipata Magistrates Court over two charges of aggravated robbery and attempted murder, which he was slapped with on Thursday, June 20.
Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga said Banda has been remanded in a correctional facility while his case is referred to the High Court, which has the jurisdiction to preside over the offenses with which is charged.
Hamoonga also gave an update on Banda’s May 25 disappearance, stating that efforts are being made to record another statement from Banda while investigations continue.
“Initially, Mr. Banda did not mention any individuals in the first statement recorded by the police. However, allegations have been raised by him in his subsequent letter of complaint,” he explained.
He added that the police were committed to ensuring a thorough investigation and would provide Banda with another opportunity to formally record his claims through a statement, as is required in a criminal investigation.
Twice, the police failed to interview Banda regarding his disappearance as he fainted and developed a medical condition at the police station and was returned to medical care.
