The governments of Zambia and Tanzania are in the process of establishing a new multi-product petroleum pipeline with a capacity to transport at least five million tons of petroleum products annually.
Michael Kachumi, Vice Chairperson of the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), mentioned that the existing Tazama pipeline’s capacity is 78,000 metric tons, while the current demand in the country is approximately 90,000 metric tons of petroleum products per year.
Kachumi stated during a press briefing in Ndola that the implementation of the new pipeline will have a significant effect on reducing fuel prices in Zambia.
He further revealed that ERB and Tazama Pipelines Limited had productive discussions regarding Tazama’s advancements in utilizing drag-reducing agents to enhance the capacity of the current pipeline.
During the same event, Engineer Davison Thawethe, Managing Director of Tazama Pipelines Limited, affirmed that the existing pipeline is in excellent condition and can operate close to its maximum capacity for transporting petroleum products into Zambia.
