Chipolopolo, Elephants Renew AFCON Rivalry with Ivory Coast as CAF Completes AFCON Qualifiers Draw

Must read

The Zambia national football team will once again spar with reigning African champions Ivory Coast in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Chipolopolo and the Elephants have today been drawn in Group G together with other West African nations Sierra Leone and Chad in the qualifiers for the continental showpiece.

Avram Grant’s side was in the same group as Ivory Coast in the qualifiers for the last edition of the AFCON and famously rallied to a 3-0 victory in Ndola to end its eight-year wait for an appearance at the tournament.

Meanwhile, Zambia will also come up against the lowly-ranked Lone Stars of Sierra Leone in a repeat of the group stage meeting which ended in a barren stalemate at the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia where Chipolopolo finished as runner-ups.

Chipolopolo will also have to negotiate past Chad’s Les Sao whom they managed to beat both at home and away back in 2007 in the qualifiers for the 2008 AFCON held in Ghana.

The draw qualifiers for the Morocco 2025 AFCON were held this afternoon at Supersport studio in Randburg of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Zambia begins its AFCON qualification campaign in September with its first opponents in the opening round matches to be confirmed by CAF in due course.

Below is a detailed breakdown of all the groups in the qualifiers:
