The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has, between April and June 2024, destroyed food items worth K4.2 million after deeming them unfit for human consumption.
Council spokesperson Chola Mwamba said the products were confiscated in the second quarter of the year for being in violation of several health and safety regulations.
Some of the food items had expired while others were poorly labeled or had their packaging compromised. Others had their labels tampered with or were being traded illegally.
Mwamba said the Council acted to protect consumers from potentially hazardous food products and warned individuals and businesses selling unfit food items of strict legal repercussions.
She has sent a stern warning to business entities and individuals engaged in such illegal practices and urged the public to purchase their food from reputable establishments and to report any food related complaints to the Council.
