Zambia is set to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity at major public facilities, including international airports, shopping malls, and bus terminals. The initiative is propelled by the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN) through the Eduroam programme.
ZAMREN, a specialized internet service provider with a focus on catering to the needs of research and education, is committed to leveraging Eduroam to promote the adoption of digital services for learning and research. Currently, Eduroam internet is accessible at all ZAMREN-affiliated schools and universities across the country.
Recent developments include the connectivity of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport and the East Park shopping mall in Lusaka, the capital. ZAMREN has outlined plans for further expansion to additional malls, international airports, and potentially intercity bus terminals.
Felix Mutati, the Minister of Science and Technology, emphasized the positive impact of Eduroam’s rollout on facilitating learning and research. He highlighted the convenience it brings to students, learners, researchers, and educators, enabling them to engage in activities seamlessly while at locations such as East Park mall or waiting at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.
ZAMREN aims to enhance accessibility to digital resources and connectivity, contributing to the advancement of education and research initiatives throughout Zambia. As the Eduroam programme continues to expand, it is anticipated to play a crucial role in fostering a digitally connected and empowered community in the country.
