The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has dismissed claims that the increased issuance of National Registration Cards (NRCs) in the provinces is a tactic to manipulate the 2026 general elections.
Permanent Secretary Joseph Akafumba clarified that the NRC distribution is not intended for election rigging.
According to Akafumba, the Department of National Registration, Passport, and Citizenship is tasked with issuing NRCs to all eligible citizens as outlined in the National Registration Act Cap 126 of the Laws of Zambia. He emphasized that NRC issuance should not be exclusively tied to electoral activities.
In a statement, Akafumba noted that the NRC is a crucial document for accessing various services, including employment and banking. He condemned the allegations as baseless, misleading, and alarming, asserting that they should be dismissed outright.
