“Hon. Sylvia Masebo is one politician whose strength, and sometimes ends up being her weakness, is that she is too straight and a “no nonsense” type of person,” says Miles Sampa.
Writing on his Facebook page, Sampa said the Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo, whose blood some people – especially from the Patriotic Front – are baying for is doing the right thing fighting grand corruption at the Ministry of Health and needs the support of all well-meaning Zambians and “not painting her black for the grand corruption scandal she has uncovered.”
The country is still reeling from Masebo’s revelation last week that US$24 million of medical supplies and drugs in 61 containers were discovered stored at private premises instead of the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies (ZAMMSA) warehouse. In the wake of this disclosure, the board of ZAMMSA has suspended its Director General.
Rising to her defence today, Sampa, who is one of the PF party presidents, described the Health Ministry as a bedrock of successful grand corruption scandals from one government to another, which Masebo has been fighting.
“HH gave her the Health Ministry to sort out but it has been a bedrock of successful grand corruption scandals from one government to another. That’s where mafias of mafias operate to steal state resources,” Sampa charged.
“It’s worse off than the Ministry of Agriculture where everyone and all tenders are not under the Ministers or the President, but tender mafias. Step on one and you get sacrificed as Minister. They pay big into the ‘system’ to engineer a non-cooperating Minister’s firing.”
He further alleged that the tender mafia even invests in removing a President. “If the President is not dancing to their tune, then they invest big in the long term to remove the President.”
“The Health Ministry has drained Minister Masebo physically, mentally and emotionally. She is, however, doing the right thing. My take is that Hon. Masebo has taken the fight against the mafia that have been holding our Health Ministry hostage for years to stop corruption and loss or abuse of public resources,” he maintained.
He warned that Zambia has a choice between Masebo or the tender or supply mafia’s capture of the Ministry of Health because only she is brave enough to sort them out. “Otherwise, corruption will be at the Ministry to stay forever.”
