Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Director-General Guntila Muleya has been shot dead in unknown circumstances.
Multiple reports, including from the Zambia Police and the Ministry of Information and Media, have confirmed Muleya’s death.
According to the official police statement, a member of the public filed a report at Lusaka’s Woodlands Police Station around 10:30 hours today concerning a suspicious event the previous night and the subsequent discovery of a body this morning.
Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga explained that the man reported having observed a motor vehicle with open doors around 20:00 hours last night in Njolwe area, in the vicinity of Leopards Hill. Shortly thereafter, he heard two gunshots being fired. On his way to work this morning, the man found the body of another male lying on the ground.
At the crime scene, the police found a body with two bullet wounds on the back and the head.
“Upon receiving this report, the police promptly visited the scene of the crime, located at Palabana NAPSA Housing along the gravel road. The body of a male individual was found with two bullet wounds on the back and the head. A closer examination revealed a deep bullet wound on the forehead. Two bullet cartridges were recovered at the scene,” said Hamoonga.
An identity card was found in the victim’s trousers pocket bearing his name and position.
And, announcing Muleya’s death, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said his family became concerned last night when he had not returned home around 21:00 hours and began searching for him.
Muleya took up the position of IBA Director General on 6 May 2024 and was formerly the General Manager of Multichoice Zambia.
