Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu has moved to allay public fear and concern that police officers were now involved in criminality, stating that the vast majority of officers are above board.
Speaking about the ongoing investigation involving the slain Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Director General Guntila Muleya, Mwiimbu said the public was understandably concerned.
Among the five suspects so far arrested are two police officers – Detective Constable Caleb Alex Zulu and Constable Mututsani Baza Dokowe – and a police reservist Constable William Shawa. Also arrested is IBA’s management accountant Francis Chipyoka, who was found hiding in Mansa. Constable Zulu is the younger brother to politician and well-known PF lawyer Makebi Zulu.
“First and foremost, we want to affirm that the Zambia Police Service is committed to upholding the law, ensuring public safety, and maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct. The vast majority of officers serve with integrity, dedication, and a strong sense of duty to protect and serve the citizens of our nation,” said Mwiimbu.
He stated that any police officer found to be involved in criminal activities will face the full extent of the law because there is no place for criminal behavior within the police service.
Mwiimbu said the police service remains committed to ensuring that all the allegations against its officers are rigorously investigated and those found guilty are held accountable.
He added that the swiftness with which the police moved to arrest the suspects underscores their commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice, regardless of who they are.
He said as the investigation continues, forensic teams are meticulously working to collect and analyze evidence from the crime scene. “This includes physical evidence, digital footprints, and any other relevant material that could aid in solving the case”, while interviews with potential witnesses have been conducted.
All staff members have been evacuated from the IBA offices at the Mass Media Complex, which have been sealed off as the investigators set base there.
