Zambia’s chances of winning medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are diminishing after recording another loss and elimination from the games last night.
Flyweight boxer Patrick Chinyemba was eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the men’s 51kg category after being beaten by Daniel Varela de Pina of Cape Verde.
Chinyemba was defeated by De Pina via a 5-0 points score at the North Paris Arena in the French capital on Friday evening.
De Pina’s victory saw him secure his island nation of Cape Verde its first-ever Olympic medal as he progressed into the semi-finals where he could win at least a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Chinyemba becomes the fourth Zambian athlete to be eliminated following boxer Margret Tembo, swimmer Damien Shamambo, judoka Simon Zulu, and the women’s football team eliminated from the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Zambia’s hopes of winning medals at the Summer Games now lie in female swimmer Mia Phiri as well as the men’s athletics team led by Muzala Samukonga.
