Former Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba has admonished the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) to wake up from its slumber and curb criminality in the country, which he says could cause lawlessness and instability.
Kabimba says he was “mad’ at the ruling party for coming out apologetically at alleged criminals and allowing their sympathizers to speak stronger than the government.
He said that is unacceptable and urged the party to “wake up” and deal with anyone who offends the law.
“UPND is running this government like a church. The time to wake up is now because running a government must allow you to read the writing on the war. If you can’t, then you should not be in politics,” he says.
Kabimba, who also leads the Economic Front Party, says alleged criminals are left to abuse the law with impunity because the government is not seriously pursuing those abrogating the law, but it appears apologetic to the masses instead of quashing syndicates that could destabilize the nation.
He particularly singled out the case of Independent Petauke Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Jay Banda, whose criminal activities, he alleged, have been left unchecked for too long.
Kabimba says law enforcement officers should find the criminal network and gather the correct intelligence information because Banda is not working alone.
The former Justice minister reminded the UPND that had these happenings taken place during the late President Michael Sata’s time he would have dealt with it with no time unlike what is currently transpiring where criminals are allowed to change their status as and when they wish.
