Italian Serie A club Cagliari Calcio has signed Zambian Under-20 midfielder Joseph Liteta after impressing the technical staff during his month-long trial at the club.
Liteta, who is 18 years old, joined Cagliari from newly-promoted MTN Super League side Athletico Lusaka last month with the hope of impressing the coaches in order to secure a permanent move to the club.
The Italian Lega Serie A has confirmed Liteta as one of Cagliari’s new recruits and registered players for the upcoming 2024/25 season on their website.
According to sources at Athletico Lusaka, Liteta has signed a five-year deal with Cagliari and will initially play for the club’s Primavera team (Under-21) to continue his development.
“Cagliari Club contacted Atletico’s management to finalize the deal for Liteta. I wouldn’t be surprised if he debuts in the Serie A this season because he was outstanding. He impressed everyone immensely,” the source informed Zambia Digest.
Meanwhile, striker Timothy Sichalwe, who traveled to Cagliari with Liteta last month, was unsuccessful in his assessment as he got injured during the trial.
Liteta is the second Zambian player to join Cagliari after striker Kingstone Mutandwa transferred last year from Athletico Lusaka and has since progressed to the senior team.
