Vera Liddell, the Food Service Director for Harvey School District 152 near Chicago, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for embezzling $1.5 million worth of chicken wings.
Liddell, 68, was found guilty of stealing over 11,000 cases of wings intended for remote learners during the pandemic. The theft occurred from July 2020 to February 2022, when Liddell ordered the wings from the district’s food supplier and collected them using a district cargo van.
The fraud was exposed during a routine audit, which revealed that the food service budget was $300,000 over halfway through the school year. Local Chicago TV station WGN reported that the scheme was described in legal documents as a “massive fraud.”
