President Hakainde Hichilema received an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration during the Convocation ceremony at the University of Zambia’s Great East Road Campus yesterday. In his address, President Hichilema dedicated the honor to the university’s Monks, Momas, and students across the nation, urging them to leverage educational opportunities fully.
The President also announced a directive to complete the unfinished hostels and committed K1.5 million towards the rehabilitation of Tiyende Pamodzi Block 5, recalling his own time in Room 11. He challenged former UNZA students in Cabinet to maintain their old rooms and blocks.
In a bid to enhance the university’s facilities, President Hichilema proposed a solar farm partnership to utilize part of UNZA’s land. He also highlighted significant support from the New Dawn Administration, noting that over 48,000 students have received loans in the past three years and that interest rates on Higher Education scholarships have been reduced from 15% to 10%.
Additionally, K600 million has been allocated to UNZA from a K1.2 billion budget—an unprecedented amount for the institution. The government plans to harness UNZA’s intellectual resources to address social and economic challenges.
