The Minister of Mines, Paul Kabuswe, has reiterated the government’s goal to achieve a copper production target of 3 million tonnes per year by 2030.

During a courtesy visit from Burundi’s Minister of Hydraulic Energy and Mines, Ibrahim Uwizeye, Kabuswe emphasized the critical role of mining in Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He announced plans to form a technical team from both Zambia and Burundi to facilitate knowledge exchange in mining practices.

Kabuswe outlined that the production target will be met with 1.5 million tonnes from existing brownfields and the remainder from new greenfields.

Uwizeye acknowledged Zambia’s impressive mining track record and expressed that the visit aims to finalize a mining Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations, initiated by the Presidents of Zambia and Burundi. He also highlighted Burundi’s financial challenges in the mining sector and the opportunity to learn from Zambia’s expertise.
