Traders at Chilenje Market have welcomed the recent installation of a diesel power generator by Zesco, aimed at alleviating the impact of prolonged power outages on their businesses.
Last week, Energy Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba announced the delivery of the first batch of nine diesel generators, part of a total of 23 units procured by Zesco. These generators are being installed at Chilenje, Nyumba Yanga, and Soweto markets.
Traders expressed optimism about the initiative, noting that it will enable them to resume normal operations despite the challenges posed by extended load shedding.
There were concerns among traders regarding the refueling of the generator. The uncertainty is about whether they will be responsible for this task or if Zesco will manage it.
However, Zesco Spokesperson Matongo Maumbi addressed these concerns, clarifying that Zesco will handle both the management and refueling of the generators. Traders will continue to purchase electricity from Zesco as usual.
