Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who participated in last month’s Paris Olympics, has sustained severe burns over 75% of her body after being reportedly doused with petrol by her boyfriend according to Ugandan local media.
Cheptegei, who finished 44th in Paris, is in critical condition at a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya following the incident on Sunday afternoon. According to reports, the attack, described as a domestic dispute, also resulted in burns for her boyfriend, Daniel Ndiema Marangach.
Cheptegei, 33, maintains a residence in Kenya for her training. Trans Nzoia County police commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.
