State-owned Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) has begun to distribute fertilizer for the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) ahead of schedule, Chief Executive Officer Chanda Mongo has said.
Mongo said the intent was to conclude the fertilizer distribution in its franchise areas of Southern and Western provinces before their given deadline of September 30.
Mongo disclosed yesterday that additionally, NCZ had exceeded the FISP contract target of 11,000 metric tons of fertilizer for the 2024/25 farming season, instead producing 15,000 metric tons.
“11,000 metric tons is going towards FISP and 4,000 metric tons, which is surplus, will be for our retail outlets as cash sales,” he stated.
He added that NCZ expects to increase its production capacity of D-Compound fertilizer once it commissions its blending plant. The company is in the coming week expected to commence producing 14,000 metric tons of D-Compound fertilizer for several districts under the e-voucher scheme and is in discussions with the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to produce and supply fertilizer for its farming ventures.
ZNS is actively involved in agriculture, which it has ramped up during the drought-induced food emergency in support of the government’s efforts to assure food security to its citizens.
