Security agents from the National Command Centre conducted a raid at the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees in Lusaka on Monday and Tuesday, confiscating all electronic devices from staff members.
The National Command Centre oversees several departments under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, including the Zambia Police Service, Zambia Correctional Service, Drug Enforcement Commission, Department of Immigration, and the National Anti-Terrorism Centre.
The Office of the Commissioner for Refugees, which is responsible for the recognition, protection, and management of refugees, was the focus of this operation amid concerns about suspected terrorist activities.
When approached for comment, Dickson Matembo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated, “I wasn’t around. I have not been briefed.”
Sources within the Office indicated that the National Anti-Terrorism Centre had received information regarding potential terrorist registrations disguised as refugees.
