Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, M.P., emphasized Zambia’s commitment to representing the voices of the Global South in discussions on the Global Digital Compact (GDC) during a side event at the Summit of the Future in New York.
Co-hosted by Zambia, Finland, and UNICEF, the event focused on “Shaping the Future of Learning.” Hon. Haimbe highlighted Zambia’s efforts to promote inclusive policies that address digital divides, enhance capacity-building, and strengthen partnerships for underrepresented regions in global digital governance.
“We aim to create a more equitable and inclusive digital future for all,” he stated, adding that Zambia plans to hold a digital summit in Lusaka in early October, focusing on Africa.
The Minister outlined key steps to bridge the digital divide, including the expansion of electricity and internet access in rural areas.
Additionally, Hon. Haimbe called on the international community to support Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo’s candidacy for President of the African Development Bank. He believes Dr. Maimbo will play a vital role in advancing Africa’s digital transformation through investments in skills, infrastructure, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Maimbo will represent the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in the upcoming elections in May 2025.
