The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has distributed over K3.2 million in loans to 38 beneficiaries in Munali Constituency, as part of the 2024 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment initiative. The handover ceremony took place yesterday at Mahatma Gandhi Ground in Mtendere and was officiated by Munali Member of Parliament Mike Mposha.
Mr. Mposha, who is also the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, stated that the loans are designed to support small businesses, stimulate economic growth, and generate jobs within the community. He emphasized that these funds represent an investment in the future of the constituency’s residents, rather than mere handouts.
“These loans are intended to help you expand your businesses, create jobs, and improve your livelihoods. We believe in the power of our people to lift one another,” Mr. Mposha remarked.
He urged beneficiaries to utilize the funds responsibly, noting that the success of the program hinges on their commitment to nurturing their businesses.
Mtendere Ward 34 Councillor Boniface Chibeka, who also attended the event, highlighted that these loans offer a significant opportunity for residents to access financial support without requiring collateral. He encouraged recipients to develop solid business plans and take advantage of the low 5% interest rate while ensuring timely repayment.
Mary Inambao, Vice Chairperson of the Munali Constituency Development Fund Committee, noted that the loan program is expected to enhance livelihoods by creating employment opportunities and helping individuals escape poverty. She advised beneficiaries to fully understand their business ventures to minimize the risk of failure.
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Micheal Kayombo expressed gratitude for the financial support and pledged to repay the loans.
During the event, Mr. Mposha also announced the start of K8.9 million in roadworks aimed at enhancing connectivity in the constituency. This project will cover 6.8 kilometers and includes grading and graveling of key roads in Kalingalinga, Chelstone Bazar, Muntanga, and Nkoloma.
“These roads will improve connectivity and help local traders access markets more easily,” he said, assuring that each project will be meticulously detailed to ensure transparency in budgeting and execution.
In addition to road improvements, the education sector in Munali will benefit from the distribution of 130 new desks, valued at K104,000, to four local schools, including St. Augustine and Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi School will also undergo upgrades, including new fencing and a water reticulation system, at a cost exceeding K1.2 million.
“Education is the cornerstone of progress, and we cannot achieve development without investing in our children’s future. These desks symbolize our commitment to creating a conducive learning environment,” Mr. Mposha concluded.
