Former Zambia National Football Team Coach Roald Poulsen has died at the age of 73. His death was confirmed by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to ZNBC Sport News today.
Poulsen played a pivotal role in rebuilding the Chipolopolo team following the tragic Gabon Air disaster in 1993. He arrived in Zambia on an exchange program and joined the technical staff tasked with reconstructing the national team after the tragedy.
FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga expressed condolences, highlighting Poulsen’s significant contributions during a challenging time for Zambian football.
Former FAZ Chairperson Simataa Simataa expressed disbelief at Poulsen’s passing, recalling his initial role as a physical trainer under then-coach Freddie Mwila.
Alex Namazaba, a player introduced to both the Under-23 and Senior teams by Poulsen, praised him for providing opportunities for young talent in the national squad.
