Nyau Dancers Assault Teenage Girl into Unconsciousness

A 17-year-old girl of Chadiza District in Eastern Province was recently physically assaulted to the point of losing consciousness by a Nyau traditional dancer.

The Gule Wamkulu dancer who, in the company of another, is now a fugitive from the law mercilessly and repeatedly hit the young girl with a walking stick until she lost consciousness.

Details as narrated by the police are that the victim, accompanied by a friend, arrived late to an evening ceremony on October 15 where they were to sing for and watch the Nyau at Fwintha Village.

However, the duo did not fulfill its wishes after being denied entry and participation in the event for the reason that they were late and should go back home. The girls complied, turned, and began the trek back home but unbeknownst to them, two Nyaus had followed them behind.

Upon realizing this, the girls started to run. One of the girls managed to get away into the night but the unfortunate victim was cornered and ruthlessly assaulted with a walking stick.

On October 19, one of the Gule Wamkulu dancers suspected to be involved in the assault, Abraham Mbewe, was arrested while his accomplice remains at large.
