ECL Calls For Collaboration Amongst Opposition After Tonse Alliance Formation

Must read

Former republican president Edgar Lungu has appealed to the opposition in the country to collaborate in order to strengthen their bid for public office in the 2026 general elections.

Lungu was this afternoon unveiled as the new Tonse Alliance political grouping’s 2026 presidential candidate during a launch held at the Palm Valley Resort in Lusaka.

However, Lungu’s bid for re-election remains complicated having previously served two terms as president with the Constitutional Court set to rule on his eligibility case on 10th December, 2024.

Speaking via Zoom after his unveiling today, Lungu expressed his gratitude to associates of the Tonse Alliance for endorsing him as their preferred presidential candidate.

The former ruling Patriotic Front (PF) leader also appealed to the members of the newly formed political movement to support his candidature in order to fulfill his ambition of returning to State House in 2026.

“I’m thankful and honoured for this noble gesture by the Tonse Alliance partners of adopting me as the 2026 presidential candidate. I pledge that I will not let you down as your 2026 candidate because with your support and the support of the collective Zambians, be assured that victory is certain,” Lungu said.

Lungu further called on opposition parties in Zambia to co-operate in order to challenge the current UPND regime under Republican President Hakainde Hichilema.

“My appeal to other political alliances such as the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), People’s Pact, Zambia We Want and other political parties is that let’s keep our doors wide open to talk together and work together in order to redeem this country especially that all political and economic parameters are clearly showing that this government and its leaders will not save Zambia,” he said.
