There was a time when the public publication of a pastoral letter from the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops brought the country to a halt. Its contents were given almost reverential contemplation by all who read them, Catholic or not. Especially politicians.
Remember the one just before the 1991 elections that toppled the White Handkerchief? When you read that the signatories had been in ‘much prayer and reflection’ before putting their collective pen to paper, it was hard to disagree with the claim.
The pastoral letter carried almost the force of a fatwa delivered by a venerated mullah in an Islamic nation. These days, I’m not so sure. I think familiarity between politicians and the men in robes has cut the moral ground from under their sandals.
