Under the pretext of disciplining his 12-year-old stepdaughter for allegedly selling mealie meal, a 50-year-old man of Chipata indecently assaulted her and ejaculated on her chitenge wrapper.
The victim narrated that the man, named Paul Phiri, who worked as a security guard, was whipping her and in the process, her chitenge wrapper came off her body leaving her with a skirt.
“After the wrapper dropped while he was whipping me, he hugged me from behind and removed his manhood, which he wanted to insert inside my private parts,” she told the Chipata Magistrates Court.
The stepfather attempted to remove her underwear but failed as she shouted for help and hit him with a plank before running outside the house where she found a neighbor. She narrated her ordeal to the neighbor who took her to the police post to report the incident.
The police officers who visited the scene found the man’s semen ejaculated on the child’s chitenge.
High Court Judge Mercy Makubalo convicted and sentenced Phiri to 20 years of jail time with hard labor to deter others like him from taking advantage of children under their care.
For a country fighting to end injustice against women and girls, the rate at which sexual crimes are being recorded is not only discouraging but also frightening.
