FDD President Edith Nawakwi Fails to Appear in Court Due to Hospitalization

Must read

Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi failed to appear before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court yesterday as she is currently admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) due to illness.

Nawakwi is facing charges of kidnapping and threatening to kill the Pheluna and Milton Hatembo. The case, which was scheduled for continuation of trial, came up before Magistrate Amy Masoja.

Defence lawyer Tresford Chali informed the court that Nawakwi had been unwell and was admitted to UTH on Sunday night, following an earlier admission at Forest Park Hospital over the same weekend.

“We were unable to obtain a certificate of admission as she was admitted last night, but we will endeavor to secure one from UTH,” Chali explained.

He added that it was uncertain whether Nawakwi would be able to attend court on the next scheduled dates and requested an adjournment.

The prosecution raised no objections to the defence’s request but expressed concern over the delays.

Magistrate Masoja ruled in favor of the adjournment, stating that illness was beyond one’s control.

The court directed the defence to produce hospital documentation.

The matter has been adjourned to February 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2025, for the continuation of the trial.
