Augustine Mulenga Eyes Sensational Chipolopolo Return Ahead of AFCON

Must read

South Africa-based attacker Augustine Mulenga says he is targeting a recall to the Chipolopolo to represent the nation at the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, to be held in Morocco.

The 34-year-old winger, who has 33 caps for the Chipolopolo, has told SABC Sport that every Zambian player is currently looking forward to earning a spot in the national team, especially after qualification for the continental showpiece.

“Yes, being a soccer player, it’s every player’s dream to play for their national team, and when the nation qualified for the AFCON, I’m sure each and every one always tries to work extra hard so that they can have that opportunity to represent the country,” said Mulenga.

Mulenga, who currently features for Amazulu in the South African top flight, says he is also eager to convince national team head coach Avram Grant to include him in his set-up and ultimately make the trip to Morocco later this year in December.

“I’m sure that I’m going to work so hard and see when the time comes if I’m going to be selected or not, but I have confidence in myself that I will be there,” he said.

Mulenga has made just one appearance for Amazulu this season after suffering an injury but has since recovered and is ready to raise his hand for selection to club head coach Arthur Zwane.

“Yes, it starts from the club, and in the first round, I haven’t played many games because of the injury, but now I’ve recovered and I’m sure I’ll start playing soon,” he said.

With game time guaranteed at his club, Mulenga says he is optimistic about being considered for national team selection.

“When the coaches give me that opportunity, and I’m back on the field, I’m going to try by all means to give my best and find myself back in the national team,” he added.

The former Orlando Pirates forward has not been called up for national duty under Avram Grant, having last played for the Chipolopolo in 2022.
