Lusaka Businesswoman Sues United Teachers Union of Zambia for K730,000 Over Unpaid Supplies

The United Teachers Union of Zambia (UTUZ) has been taken to the High Court by a Lusaka businesswoman, Angela Mbambara, over allegations of failing to settle a balance of K730,000 for T-shirts and Chitenge fabric supplied for Teachers’ Day celebrations.

In her statement of claim, Mbambara explained that UTUZ, a nonprofit organization advocating for teachers’ rights and welfare in Zambia, entered into a contract with her between September 25, 2023, and March 19, 2024.

The contract involved the supply of branded T-shirts for Teachers’ Day and African fabric (Chitenge) for Women’s Day celebrations.

Mbambara claims she fulfilled her obligations by supplying the items as agreed.

However, UTUZ allegedly failed, neglected, or refused to pay the full amount owed for the supplies.

The outstanding amount stands at K730,000.

Despite repeated attempts to recover the money, including multiple reminders, Mbambara asserts that UTUZ has remained unresponsive, causing her significant financial loss, emotional distress, and inconvenience.

She argues that UTUZ’s failure to honor the contractual agreement constitutes bad faith and a breach of contract.

Mbambara is claiming payment of K730,000 owed, damages for breach of contract, and interest on the sum at the prevailing commercial bank lending rate.
