Masebo Bans Council From Administering Land in Chongwe

Must read

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Sylvia Masebo has suspended the Chongwe Municipal Council due to several issues related to the issuance of land in the district.

Last evening, Masebo announced the decision to suspend the Municipal Council’s land administration agency as her ministry continues to preside over several problems related to land allocation in the country.

The suspension of the Chongwe Municipal Council’s land administration comes after a growing number of complaints regarding land disputes and bribery in the allocation of land in the district.

“I regret to announce today, the 16th of January 2025, with immediate effect, that I have suspended the agency of the Chongwe Municipal Council in land administration,” Masebo disclosed.

She continued: “This is in line with Section 7 of Land Circular No. 1 of 1985, which empowers the minister responsible for Lands and Natural Resources to suspend any erring council in the administration of land.”

In the meantime, Masebo has tasked the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ Commission of Lands to handle all matters of land administration in the district while the Municipal Council serves its suspension.

“During the period of this suspension, the Commission of Lands in the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will deal with all matters relating to the administration of land in Chongwe district,” she said.

In conclusion, Masebo advised councils across the country to administer land in accordance with the laws of Zambia.

“May I take this opportunity to urge all local authorities in the country to ensure that they adhere to the regulations in administering land,” she said.
