Sundowns Role Not Easy — Mweene

Must read

Chipolopolo legend and current Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper coach Kennedy Mweene has described his new role at the South African giants as a challenging undertaking.

The 40-year-old 2012 Africa Cup winning hero was appointed last month as the senior goalkeeper trainer at Sundowns after previously serving as an assistant in the same role.

Speaking in an interview with ZNBC’s Radio 4, Mweene said that the role of goalkeeper coach at one of the biggest clubs on the continent comes with a lot of duties and pressure.

“It is not easy, but that is what it means when you are at a big team like Sundowns. You must be prepared to work under pressure always, and for players, it’s even worse,” Mweene said.

Nonetheless, Mweene says he is relishing his new role and the responsibility of training figures such as Ronwen Williams, the reigning CAF African Goalkeeper of the Year.

“I think the position I’m holding comes with a lot of responsibilities, and it is something I wanted to do after my football career, and I’m enjoying it,” he said.

Given his legendary status in both Zambia and South Africa following an illustrious playing career, Mweene says there are a lot of expectations from the football fraternity regarding his new role as goalkeeper coach.

“It comes with a lot of expectations from many people because they know what I bring to the team,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sundowns are currently in the midst of preparations for their encounter against Moroccan side ASFA Rabat in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Sunday.

Sundowns must win on Sunday to guarantee their spot in the quarter-finals of the competition, and Mweene is optimistic that the South Africans will complete their qualification.

“Definitely, we have to win, whether by hook or crook, because we are one foot in, and on Sunday we just have to win because we know what is at stake,” he said.

Mweene remains the most capped Zambia national team player, with 127 appearances for Chipolopolo in his international career which spanned 17 years.
