A couple from Lusaka’s Chalala area, Smart Mumba and Chanda Majory Lwembo, have been found with a case to answer and placed on their defense in a trial where they stand accused of murdering their 14-year-old maid, Janet Mpundu.
Janet, a young girl from Mansa, reportedly died in her sleep.
However, the prosecution alleges foul play, presenting evidence to suggest she endured severe abuse leading to her death.
On Monday, Lusaka High Court Judge Vincent Siloka ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against the accused.
This decision followed testimony from state witnesses, including forensic pathologist Dr. Cordelia Himwaze, who provided detailed evidence linking Janet’s death to blunt impact trauma caused by assault.
Dr. Himwaze testified that Janet’s body showed extensive injuries, including multiple abrasions, burns, and lacerations.
Her upper back was covered with punctured abrasions, her left ear was scarred by burns and cuts, and her arms and shoulders bore multiple wounds. Disturbingly, her fingernails had been traumatically removed, likely with a sharp instrument.
Defense lawyer Chanda Katwishi informed the court that the couple would give sworn testimony and call three additional witnesses to support their case.
The matter has been adjourned to February 12 for the opening of the defense.
