The Ministry of Information and Media says there is no legal basis for President Hakainde Hichilema to intervene in the termination of CAMNET TV from the DStv and GOtv platforms.
Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana says this follows a request from Mrs. Victoria Chiluba during her late husband’s funeral, asking the President to take action to prevent the shutdown.
Mr. Kawana explains that after conducting an inquiry, the ministry discovered that the issue is a contractual dispute between CAMNET TV and MultiChoice Africa Holdings, the parent company of DStv and GOtv.
He says the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) was brought in to investigate the matter and their findings revealed that the termination was a result of CAMNET TV’s failure to meet the terms of the Channel Distribution Agreement.
Mr. Kawana told journalists at a press briefing in Lusaka that the failure to meet key performance standards led to concerns over equipment damage and a decline in service quality.
