After a lengthy period spanning over two decades, the athletics governing body will usher in new leadership this year as the long-serving president departs.
Zambia Athletics Association (ZAA) long-serving president Elias Mpondela will not stand for re-election after 26 years at the helm of the organization ahead of the 2025 elections.
Mpondela is not among the candidates vying for the ZAA presidency, having not filed his nomination by the deadline date for submissions on February 2, 2025.
Four candidates have successfully filed their nominations to contest the elections slated for March 29, 2025.
Those vying to replace Mpondela at ZAA are Major Bernard Bwalya, Davison Mungambata, Kennedy Mubanga, and Nathaniel Chipalo.
Mpondela has been president of ZAA since 1998 and declared in 2023 that he would not seek a new term after the conclusion of his last mandate.
Meanwhile, Mpondela says he has not issued on his candidature.
He says he is still consulting on whether to stand or not.
