Malume hears “3,205 health workers” and starts counting lives, not numbers.

Must read

Ba Malume was at the market negotiating tomatoes like a seasoned diplomat when someone shouted, “3,205 health workers have been recruited!” One man waved it off, “Ah, just numbers.” Malume slowly turned, squinted at him, and said, “My friend, even one nurse can cancel a funeral, and you are here calling thousands just numbers? You want help or you want statistics?” The marketeers laughed, and just like that, Malume had a full audience.

He placed his basket down and began. “Listen carefully. These are not just figures. We are talking about doctors, nurses, midwives, clinical officers, lab people real human beings going into clinics.” He pointed at a woman nearby. “Imagine your child gets sick at night and you run to the clinic. Before, you might find darkness, silence, and your own prayers. But now, chances of finding help are improving. That is what these numbers mean more hands, more hope.” He paused, then added, “And please, don’t reach there and start saying I know Malume, let the professionals work!”

The group burst into laughter, and Malume continued. “And more doctors are still coming, over 200. Right now, one doctor can be handling about 12,000 people. That is not treatment, that is a survival competition! It’s like one barber trying to cut the hair of the whole district, by the time he reaches you, even your hairstyle has given up.” The laughter grew louder. “So reducing that pressure means better care, shorter queues, and less suffering.”

He scratched his head and smiled. “In fact, I am even praying that my friend’s daughter here gets picked this time. Last time, my cousin was selected, and now he walks like he owns the hospital, even when he is just passing by!” The crowd laughed again, some nodding in agreement with that familiar behavior.

Ba Malume lifted his basket and spoke with quiet approval. “This is a very good step. It shows leadership that is thinking about real people, not just talking. Credit must go to Aisha for pushing in this direction.” He began to walk away, then turned back one last time. “My friends, never laugh at numbers like these because behind every number is someone who will be saved and maybe, just maybe, one of them is your relative who will start refusing to greet you properly.”
