“Unearthing the Legacy: Kabwe’s Ongoing Battle Against Lead Poisoning”

Must read

Numerous reports highlight lead poisoning among Kabwe residents, linked to the former Broken Hill mine, managed by Anglo American until Zambia’s mining nationalization in 1974. This infamous case remains a global concern, impacting tens of thousands in Kabwe, Zambia, particularly children and women of childbearing age.

In response, the World Bank allocated $65.6 million to a five-year initiative aimed at mitigating environmental health risks in heavily polluted mining areas, notably Kabwe. However, locals express ongoing struggles, indicating that even World Bank assistance hasn’t fully addressed the aftermath.

Law firms Leigh Day and Mbuyisa Moleele announced plans in 2019 to file a class action lawsuit against Anglo-American South Africa (AASA) on behalf of affected Kabwe residents. Allegations suggest historic mismanagement of the Kabwe lead mine by Anglo-American, despite the company’s denial of direct involvement.

Despite the passage of four decades, Kabwe residents continue to grapple with the enduring consequences of lead poisoning, underscoring the urgency for comprehensive remediation efforts.
