Police Have No Intention of Ambushing Lungu

Must read

Zambia Police Service spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says the police have no intention of ambushing former president Edgar Lungu with arrest under the dark cover of the night.
Contrary to claims made by Lungu yesterday, Hamoonga described the allegations as unfounded and false.

“At no point did we have any intention of ambushing Mr. Lungu or any other citizen. Our primary concern is the safety and security of all individuals, including Mr. Lungu,” Hamoonga stated.
He said the police monitor Lungu’s movement for his own safety as a former head of state, to which he is entitled.

“The Police security personnel currently assigned to Mr. Lungu are funded by the government. However, there are situations where this personnel may not suffice in ensuring his safety during all movements. Therefore, additional measures by the police are sometimes necessary to provide adequate protection.”

Yesterday, Lungu alleged that he had information he was going to be ambushed and arrested in the middle of the night like a common criminal and wondered why he could not be accorded respect as a former head of state by being properly summoned.

This is seemingly a preemptive attempt to thwart police action following his utterances a few days earlier that it was possible to change government before the current government’s constitutional term of five years elapses in 2026. A cross-section of Zambians have expressed concern over the implications of those words, with the Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, stating that they bordered on criminality.
