Chisamba 100MW Solar Project Advances – ZESCO

Must read

ZESCO Limited, through its subsidiary Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation, has advanced construction works for its 100MW solar power project in Chisamba.

The project, whose development commenced around mid-year, is among the medium-term measures being employed to diversify Zambia’s energy generation mix and move away from hydropower dependency, especially with the current debilitating drought.

According to an update, ZESCO said the project had so far created 230 jobs. By the beginning of August, 120 hectares of land had been cleared and fenced off and the main road to the plant was constructed. Drainage is being constructed.

Other completed works include the excavation of the foundation for the photovoltaic field transformer and the pouring of concrete in the transformer foundation column.

Zambia is reeling from the worst power shortage as ZESCO struggles to provide power to customers. A good portion of residential customers now have to endure stretches of more than 24 hours without power. And when power is restored, it rarely stays on for more than two hours.

In mitigation, ZESCO has begun to install diesel-powered generators in certain public trading places such as markets.
