President Hakainde Hichilema yesterday announced the signing of three key agreements between ZESCO and Power China. These agreements aim to tackle Zambia’s energy deficit exacerbated by one of the worst droughts in recent history.
The agreements include a framework cooperation deal for the supply, delivery, and installation of rooftop solar systems in Zambia, an Engineering Procurement and Construction agreement for the Kariba North Solar photovoltaic (PV) project, and a contract for the Kafue Gorge Lower Solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant.
President Hichilema emphasized that these initiatives are crucial for alleviating the current energy shortage. He acknowledged the severe impacts of energy insecurity on the economy and the vulnerable populations, including women and youth. The ongoing drought has highlighted the nation’s energy vulnerabilities, but Hichilema expressed confidence that Zambia will emerge from this crisis stronger.
The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to diversifying the energy mix to reduce reliance on hydroelectric power, which is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
