…Cell inmates allegedly murder fellow detainee
A 20-year-old male suspect has been murdered while in police custody at Matero Police Station in Lusaka, Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga has announced.
Hamoonga said Joseph Daka of an unknown address in Lusaka’s George Compound was on September 19 arrested and detained on an aggravated robbery charge and is believed to have been murdered by his fellow cellmates between 23:00 hours on Sunday, September 22 and 08:00 hours on Monday, September 23.
“It has been established that the suspect was murdered by his fellow inmates while in detention. Preliminary investigations have revealed that he was tied and beaten by his fellow inmates, resulting in his death,” Hamoonga explained.
He said the Custody Officer discovered Daka’s body at approximately 08:00 hours today during a routine check in Cell Number 3, where he found the deceased with a swollen chin and bruises on both hands, indicating he had been assaulted.
He said 12 suspects have been identified and investigations are going on to zero in on who will be charged with murder.
