Zambia’s Olympic bronze medalist in the 400m, Muzala Samukonga, has officially joined Grand Slam Track, marking a significant milestone as the first African athlete to sign with the new professional track league for its inaugural season in 2025.
Samukonga made history in Paris by securing Zambia’s first Olympic track and field medal since Samuel Matete’s silver in the 400m hurdles at the 1996 Atlanta Games. His impressive 2023 season included a bronze medal at the Olympics, a silver and a gold in the 4x400m relay at the African Games in Ghana, and a bronze at the 2024 African Senior Championships in Cameroon. He also achieved a personal best of 43.74 in the 400m, positioning him third on the all-time African list, and finished third in the Diamond League final.
“I am honored to be part of Grand Slam Track and will proudly represent Zambia in this league. Competing against top athletes in the upcoming Slams is an exciting opportunity,” Samukonga said. “This league will allow us to showcase our talents in new ways.”
He joins an elite roster that includes Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and others. Founded by sprint legend Michael Johnson, Grand Slam Track will feature four annual events between April and September, showcasing head-to-head races with a unique format designed to highlight the best in athletics.
